There are several reasons for using layers and in this tutorial I will teach you how to do some of the basics. In this tutorial I will cover:

Fading Images out

1st I open up a photo - I'm just using a Photo (JPG)

I will show you two different ways to fade an image out.
FIRST WAY:

Press Ctrl + A or go to SELECTIONS and down to SELECT ALL

Now there is a dotted line all the way around the image.
Press Ctrl + C or go to EDIT and down to COPY.

Now Press Ctrl + V or go to EDIT and down to PASTE then over to AS A NEW IMAGE.

Now you have a copy of the same image but it says (layer1)

Now it's time to fade this image out. Make sure your Layers palette is open
If it's not anywhere go to VIEW and down to TOOLBARS.

Put a check next to LAYERS PALETTE

Move the lever to the left or right and fade the image as much as you want.
When you are done, go to LAYERS, down to MERGE, over to MERGE ALL (Flatten).

Here's my faded image, I moved the lever to 52.
Then wrote her name in black.

Softening Edges of Photos
Open an image you'd like to use. I'm using a picture of my horses Anna.

In my case, I want to fade it out to the color of my background.
(HTML CODE COLOR #EFE7D6)
If you want it to fade to white set your background to white by clicking on the background color:

Once your background is set you need to go to your TOOL OPTIONS window and set your FEATHER to 4 or 5 or whatever you want. THe bigger the number the more feathering.
*If your tool options window is not open go to VIEW down to TOOLBARS then check the box that says tool options*

NOW - it's time to use the SELECTION tool.

You need to draw a square around the image - Start at top left corner and drag down twards bottom right corner. Here is my selcted area.

Now you need to CROP the image. Do this by Pressing SHIFT + R or go to IMAGE then down to CROP TO SELECTION.

This is my final photo:

Building With Layers

This is something that is great for those of you who like to make pictures with lots of things in them such as site banners, litter images, or starting a new site design idea.

I am tired.. I will finish this another night!!
