This is actually quite easy to do! We will do a simple one to get you started:
We will be using LAYERS - When you open a new image it is called the Background so let's go ahead and open a NEW IMAGE make it 300 wide x 200 High. now I want you to Create a Layer! So... go up to layers and down to New Raster Layer
Set your settings as you see them above.
Now your image says layer 1
now lets open up a picture of one of your petz
I've chosen this dog.
We now need to copy and paste the pet picture onto layer 1 on your new image.
Click on your pet pic and press copy (Ctrl +C) then click on your new blank image and press the paste button (Ctrl + V) and now your pet will be on the new image.
now you need to un-select (select none) the image so it doesnt have the dotted lines going around it.
Now you need to go to your Layer Palette if it is not on your screen go up to View and down to toolbars and check the box that says layers palette.
Layer 1 is selected and now see where it says 100 to the right of it? that is like a little lever. Pull it to the Left.
As you pull it to the left your pet begins to fade away! set it to where you want it.
I put mine to 34 and this is where I want it... I also want to write some text over it.. so what you do next is go up to Layers and down to Merge over to merge all (flatten)
now your image says background again!
I'll add some text over it now
The image is too big so I need to CROP it.
Use your selction tool  looks like a little box. and make a square around your picture as close to it as possible without cutting into it.
Like this then press Shift + R or Image then Crop to Selection
here's the finished work!!
